Manage IBS with Diet
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms can be triggered by the foods you eat and how much you eat. Since diet plays a role in both the development and the treatment of IBS, dietary changes can go a long way toward helping to keep symptoms in check.
The American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends the following guidelines for managing symptoms of IBS:
Keep a food diary to help identify problem foods and eating habits that may be aggravating symptoms.
- Eat lots of foods rich in fiber, such as whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Eat at consistent times each day to help regulate bowel function.
- Avoid large, heavy meals. Instead opt for smaller portions of lighter foods.
- Drink plenty of water and other fluids. Skip the alcohol, caffeine, and artificial sweeteners.
